Our Mission

TO PROVIDE QUALITY TRANSPORTATION SERVICES FOR STUDENTS IN A POSITIVE AND SAFE MANNER WITH A COMMITMENT TO SERVICE AND EXCELLENCE.

EDUCATION BEGINS WITH TRANSPORTATION

The transportation department provides safe and reliable transportation for the students of Festus R-VI School District.

Currently, the transportation department has a total of 18 regular bus drivers and 2 on-call bus drivers – all of whom safely transport over 1000 students every day.  There are 17 regular education buses and 3 special services routes.  The transportation department maintains a fleet of 36 buses, 6 mini vans, 5 pick-up trucks and a host of support vehicles and equipment.  The department’s fleet supervisor Christopher Hennes oversees the maintenance and care of our fleet.  Our drivers assist the shop and show their Tiger pride by maintaining clean and tidy buses.  Transportation is provided for eligible students in Pre-K and Grades K-12.  Bus service is provided in two tiers, Grades 6-12 and K-5.

Transportation Administration

Important Information

About

Missouri State statutes and regulations govern K-12 student transportation routes and funding. In addition, Festus R-6 utilizes routing software to determine the most efficient routes for buses to travel, and routes are approved by the Board of Education each year.

Transportation Change Requests

Families may apply for a transportation change request if it meets the following criteria:

The request is not temporary but a predetermined set schedule on a consistent basis for the current school year.

The alternate route is located within school district transportation boundaries.

The daycare pickup or drop-off request must be within school district transportation boundaries. The request does not cause the bus route to exceed bus capacity

Alternate route services may be discontinued if:

The bus capacity limit is reached with non-alternate route students

The student receives a misconduct slip

The transportation office does not have the ability to make address changes. If you have moved please contact your students' main office.

To submit a transportation change, please access this Change of Transportation Form. A two-week notice before the change is needed is preferred.

Bus Routes

Families are required to sign up for transportation services annually. Routes are not the same year-to-year but are developed as families choose their transportation needs each year during their annual verification or initial enrollment. The Infinite Campus Student Information System includes student address, transportation address and school assignment. Pickup and drop-off times are approximate, and families should allow 10 minutes of flexibility from the scheduled pickup and drop-off times. Students should arrive at the designated stop at least five minutes before their scheduled pickup time.

Late Buses

If your student's bus is running more than 15 minutes late, the transportation office will send an alert notification via the MyRide app. If you need immediate assistance, please contact the transportation office at 636-937-5716.

New Students and New Addresses

Bus assignments for new students and new addresses may take 2-4 school days for regular enrollment, and up to 5 school days for enrollment in special education programs. Stop requests are processed in the order in which they are received, with an emphasis on student safety. Same-day bus service for new students and new addresses is not always possible. If a new stop has to be created and existing drop-off times are changed, three additional days may be required to ensure adequate communication to all families impacted by the changes. Families are responsible for transportation until a permanent bus stop is established.

Bus Safety Tips

School buses are the safest way for students to travel, but children also need to do their part to stay alert and aware of their surroundings to prevent injury. We recommend parents teach their children the following safety rules for getting on and off the bus, and for exercising good behavior while riding.

  • Be aware of moving traffic.
  • Leave plenty of time to get to the bus stop.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Stay at a safe distance from the street.
  • Stay 10 giant steps away from the outside of the bus while the bus is pulling up.
  • Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting on or off.
  • Be cautious of clothing or backpacks that can get caught on the bus handrails and doors.
  • Hold the handrail going up and down the stairs.
  • Find your assigned seat and sit down as soon as you’re on the bus.
  • Be courteous and respectful to your driver. Listen to directions.
  • Don’t put your head, arms, papers or anything out the window.
  • Don’t pick up anything you drop outside the bus.
  • Wait to cross the street until the driver lets you know it’s OK.
  • Stay away from the bus wheels at all times.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Families that wish to have bus service will be required to sign students up annually.

  • The Transportation department is diligent to consider all factors when preparing and updating school bus routes. The top priority is always the safety of students.

Bus routes developed for the school year are created using information submitted to the Transportation department via Festus R-6's Infinite Campus Student Information System. Bus routes are not always the same from year to year. It is common for bus routes to be adjusted after a new school year begins to accommodate new students, alleviate bus overcrowding or make routes more efficient.

By identifying students who use alternate transportation, we can reduce the number of buses we need and maximize ridership in a manner that is safe and comfortable for students. This will directly benefit students by creating significant savings that can be used for classroom instruction.

    Other factors include:

In areas that do not present unreasonable pedestrian hazards:

When possible, students will be picked up at centralized stops, creating shorter route times and allowing buses to run more efficiently.

Bus stops shall be a minimum of 500 feet apart, where possible.

Buses are only routed down streets, roads and highways deemed safe and those which provide a sufficient and safe space where the bus can turn around.

Stops are generally located at corners and intersections, where traffic naturally slows, creating a safe space for students to get on and off the bus. The designated area for the bus stop must be within a bus length to the corner, which is approximately 40 feet. For safety reasons, we avoid making house stops, mid-block stops and driving into cul-de-sacs.

Cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets are generally avoided, as a standard-size passenger bus requires a 115-foot radius to safely turn.

Private roads are avoided because they may not be maintained reliably and require permission from the owners to travel them. The road must be wide enough for both the bus and oncoming traffic to safely pass each other at any point in the road and also to provide for safe visibility.

Adjustments are made to bus routes when an area and/or conditions are documented as unsafe or hazardous.

Buses typically are not routed through neighborhoods without through streets, due to lack of connectivity and direct routes. This leads to inefficient navigation and potential delays.

  • Proof of residency is required before a student can be assigned to a bus route. Residency is verified by the district registrar. If there is no existing bus stop within the district’s bus stop guidelines, a new stop will be created. The creation of new stops takes approximately 2-4 school days for regular enrollment. Please allow up to 5 school days for bus stop assignments when enrolling in special education programs.

Stop requests are processed in the order in which they are received, with an emphasis on student safety. If a new stop has to be created and existing drop-off times are changed, three additional days may be required to ensure adequate communication to all families impacted by the changes. Families are responsible for transportation to and from school until a bus stop is established.

  • It is impossible to locate a bus stop within sight of every home or child care provider. As a general policy, we locate bus stops at corner intersections where motorists expect that the bus will stop. For safety reasons, we avoid making house stops, mid-block stops and driving into cul-de-sacs. Parents, guardians and child care providers are responsible for ensuring their student arrives and departs safely to and from the bus stop. School bus drivers do not have the authority to change bus routes or student stops.

  • An address located within district boundaries is required before a student can be assigned to a bus route. Students may be assigned to fixed alternate routes based on (1) a child care provider or (2) a relative’s home address. The alternate address MUST be within student’s school transportation boundaries.

To make a request please submit the Change of Transportation form.  Do not submit transportation change requests to the bus driver. Permanent address changes must be submitted to the main office at your student’s school building.  Address changes cannot be scheduled until the transportation department receives an updated student record, which will include the new transportation address. The transportation department does not have the ability to make address changes. A two-week notice before the address changes is preferred.

  • Yes. In accordance with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), all school districts must maintain accurate, active bus ridership rosters. DESE defines an active rider as a student who rides at least one time a week. Based on this definition, the district will remove a student who does not meet the requirements of an active rider. If a student is not at the assigned stop for 10 consecutive school days, the transportation director may contact the student's family and/or place the student on the inactive rider list. If your student is inactive and plans to begin actively riding the bus, please complete this Change of Transportation Form.

  • The operator of a school bus can transport no more children than the manufacturer suggests. Festus R-6 students are transported on two types of buses one has a manufacturer suggested capacity of 84 students and the other 77 students.

  • Festus R-6 requires that a parent or caregiver be at the bus stop to meet their kindergarten students. The transportation office will attempt to contact the parent or guardian if no one is present at the stop, if we are unable to reach you or it is deemed unsafe or a traffic hazard for the bus to wait for your arrival your student will be returned to the elementary school office and you will need to arrange pick up from there.

If you would like to give permission for your student to get off the bus with an older sibling or adult other than the parent or guardian please complete this authorization form.

  • Only in emergency situations will we consider allowing a guest rider. These exceptions can only be made through the transportation office.  You must call 636-937-5716 to have your request considered. Bus routes are carefully planned to ensure efficient and safe transportation for all students.  Allowing guest riders could potentially compromise the safety measures in place, making it harder for drivers and school staff to monitor and account for everyone on the bus.

  • Anything large enough to obstruct pathways to emergency exits or inhibit visibility should not be brought onto the bus; example balloons or large projects. To ensure the safety and well-being of all bus riders, food and drinks should be kept in lunchboxes or backpacks.  Students are allowed to have drinking water on the bus, however  soda, juice, coffee, etc is not allowed.

School Bus Safety

Students Riding a School Bus Should Always:

  • Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early.
  • Stand at least 5 giant steps (10 feet) away from the edge of the road.
  • Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it’s okay before stepping onto the bus.
  • Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps or dangling objects do not get caught in the handrail or door when exiting the bus.
  • Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus.

Students Crossing a Road Should:

  • Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus.
  • Walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at least 10 giant steps ahead of the bus.
  • Be sure the bus driver can see them, and they can see the bus driver.
  • Wait for the driver’s signal to cross.

Things Kids Should Know About School Bus Safety:

  • The bus driver and others cannot see you if you are standing closer than 10 feet to the bus. Stay out of the danger zone!
  • If something falls under or near the bus, tell the driver. NEVER try to pick it up yourself!
  • While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street.
  • When you get on or off the bus, look for the bus safety lights and make sure they are flashing.
  • Be alert to traffic. When you get on or off the bus, look left, right, left before you enter or cross the street.
  • When the driver says it is safe to cross the street, remember to CROSS IN FRONT of the bus.
  • Stay in your seat and sit quietly so that the driver is not distracted.

Things Parents Should Know About School Bus Safety:

  • School buses are the safest form of highway transportation.
  • The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the bus.
  • Pedestrian fatalities (while loading and unloading school buses) account for approximately three times as many school bus-related fatalities, when compared to school bus occupant fatalities.
  • The loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone”
  • The “Danger Zone” is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver (ten feet in front of the bus where the driver may be too high to see a child, ten feet on either side of the bus where a child may be in the driver’s blind spot, and the area behind the bus).
  • Half of the pedestrian fatalities in school bus-related crashes are children between 5 and 7 years old.
  • Young children are most likely to be struck because they:
    • Hurry to get on and off the bus
    • Act before they think and have little experience with traffic
    • Assume motorists will see them and will wait for them to cross the street
    • Don’t always stay within the bus driver’s sight
