School Bus Safety Week

This week is School Bus Safety Week.  This year's theme is "Safe Rides, Everyday Heroes."  Early in the school year our drivers talk with our students about being safe on the school bus.  But there are things we can all do to help promote school bus safety.  Most important among them, is stopping when you approach a bus that has its stop sign out and its red lights flashing.  Here is what you need to know about when to stop:

When You Must Stop
  • Two-lane and three-lane roads: Drivers coming from both directions must stop.
  • Following a bus: Drivers behind a school bus going the same direction must always stop.
  • Yellow flashing lights: This means the bus is getting ready to stop. Slow down and get ready to stop.
  • Red flashing lights and stop arm: Children are getting on or off the bus. You must stay stopped until the lights turn off and the arm goes back in.

On August 28, 2026 the State passed SB 1421 stiffening the penalties for drivers found guilty of failing to stop for a school bus that is receiving or discharging students:
  • First offense:  court ordered driver's license suspension, 90 days, or as designated by the court and a fine of at least $500 but not more than $1,000
  • Second offense within 5 years:  suspension of driver's license for 90 days and a fine of at least $1,000 but not more than $2,000
  • Third or subsequent offense within 5 years:  suspension of driver's license for 180 days and a fine of at least $1,500 but not more than $3,000

Thank you for being safe around our most precious cargo.
